About our Committees

(Please note: All dates are subject to change.)

 

The following committees are active throughout the school year:

 

Apparel 

The Accompsett Elementary PTA sells a variety of active wear for both children and adults. This committee is responsible for selling these items throughout the school year via orders collected from the school population. The chairperson will work with the Executive Committee to approve the apparel company and purchase the necessary items.

Beautification (Outside)

Coordinate projects and volunteers to enhance the overall exterior appearance of our school and appropriately decorate with seasonal plantings/items. This committee chairperson will need to organize both a Fall and Spring clean-up which includes planting donated flowers. Maintenance of plantings is also needed. Numerous volunteers are needed for this committee.

Beautification (PTA Bulletin Board)  

The PTA Bulletin Board is located in the main lobby of the school.  The bulletin board contains news related to recent and upcoming PTA and School events, reminders and special notices.  It is updated throughout the year.

 

Box Tops

Coordinate the collection of box tops from students and families, and submit them on schedule to the Box Tops organization. 

Library Book Donations

Solicit donations from the school community, purchase books and acknowledge book donations made to the school’s library. Coordinate with the school librarian on the book purchases and acknowledgments.

Membership

Coordinate PTA membership enrollment and collection of dues.  Organize volunteers to sell memberships at Back to School nights, PTA meetings, and various other events throughout the year.

School Store

The school store is available daily (just prior to the start of the school day only) to various grades (1st through 5th) throughout most of the school year. The store maintains stock of a variety of small school supply items, such as pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, etc. This committee’s chairperson manages the stock of supplies, places orders to replenish items as needed, and establishes the volunteer schedule throughout the school year. Volunteers are needed in the morning prior to the school day starting. The store cannot run unless we have enough volunteers. Numerous volunteers needed to run the store.

The following committees are active during the Fall months:

Blood Drive

Work with Long Island Blood Services to organize, advertise, and schedule appointments for the annual blood drive.

Book Fair

Coordinate with Scholastic to host a Book Fair. Set-up and run the Book Fair(s), organize and schedule volunteers to assist with it.

Class Pictures

Coordinate with school and vendor to schedule classes on picture days. Distribute order forms, collect orders and distribute finished photos and retakes.

Carnival

Organize the Accompsett Carnival, including scheduling of vendors and volunteers, coordinate set-up, decorating, games, prizes, and food. Numerous volunteers needed for this event.

Game Night

Organize a night of games and LOTS of prizes. Numerous volunteers needed for this event.

Plant a Bulb

Purchase bulbs and organize a morning of planting for all of the new students and staff who have entered Accompsett Elementary in the current school year.

Kindergarten Welcome Wagon

Organize volunteers to assist incoming Kindergarten students off the bus in the morning and on the bus in the afternoon for the first two weeks of school. Whether you volunteer for the morning or afternoon, you must be available the entire two weeks. This committee needs to prepare prior to the start of school. Parents of current Kindergartners are not able to volunteer for this committee.

Summer Reading Recognition

Coordinate with the school librarian to recognize and present awards to those students who participated in the summer reading program.

The following committees are active during the Winter months:
 

Barnes & Nobles Night

Coordinate with the PARP committee in setting up a family event at a local Barnes & Noble for the school which may include activities for the children such as crafts, a scavenger hunt and guest appearances by school staff members.

Family Movie Night

Organize a large screen movie in the school gymnasium. Create snack bags with popcorn, drinks, etc. Manage the event sign-up, coordinate volunteers to set up and check in participants.

PARP - Parents As Reading Partners

Work with the school and Executive Committee to choose a theme to promote reading activities both at home and throughout the school during the “PARP Weeks”. Coordinate with the Arts in Education chairperson to contract with an approved author(s) to present to the students. Although the actual PARP event occurs during the Winter, the planning and preparation begins in the beginning of the school year. Numerous volunteers are needed to assist with decorating and possibly with other activities identified to be a part of the program in the current year.

Winter Olympics

Organize a night of relay races and fun. Coordinate with the appropriate school staff. Manage event sign-up, prepare team designations, and solicit volunteers to assist with the races. Numerous volunteers needed for this event.

The following committees are active during the Spring months:

Children’s Spring Flower Giveaway

Coordinate volunteers to assist children in picking out a flower/plant for a special someone. Be available to accept delivery of the flowers the day before the event at school. Coordinate scheduling of classes with the school.

Class Pictures

Coordinate with school and vendor to schedule classes on picture days. Distribute order forms, collect orders and distribute finished photos and retakes.

Ducks Game

Organize an end of the year outing to a Long Island Ducks game for children and their families. Collect ticket orders, coordinate purchase of tickets with the Long Island Ducks and distribute tickets upon receipt.

Field Day

Work with the gym teachers and class parents to organize volunteers and purchasing of refreshments and supplies.  Numerous volunteers needed for this event.

 

Pre-K Program

Run a program with numerous volunteers for incoming Kindergarten students.
Responsibilities include registration, development of weekly crafts, coordinating with school, and soliciting of volunteers (parents of Pre-K students that will be participating in the Pre-K Program are not eligible to volunteer for this committee).

 

Staff Appreciation Day

Organize a luncheon for the staff at Accompsett Elementary. Coordinate catering and donations, set-up and clean-up.

The following committees are related to Fundraising and may be

active at various times of the year:

Flowers Sales (Fall & Spring)
Arrange a schedule with selected nursery and coordinate sale of fall and spring flowers and plants. Coordinate volunteers to unload delivery trucks and help hand out flowers to those who purchased them. Numerous volunteers needed to help with this.

Hershey Tickets (Spring)
Coordinate the sale of discounted Hershey Tickets. Collect ticket orders, coordinate purchase of tickets with Hershey Park and distribute tickets upon receipt.

5th Grade Events/Activities

 

**Please note that ALL 5th Grade Committees require 5th Grade parent Chair people, except the 5th Grade Moving up Day Committee**

 

5th Grade Performance – March

Coordinate with assigned teachers. Organize volunteers to help with a cast party which is held at the end of the school day.

5th Grade T-Shirts - March - April

Create, purchase and distribute T-shirts that will be used for 5th Grade Spirit Day and field trip. Collect payment of 5th Grade Activities fee.

5th Grade Yearbook – All Year

Select yearbook format and collect pictures and items needed for publication. Organize volunteers to work with you on a web based program to layout the yearbook. Coordinate all activities with the school.

5th Grade Moving Up Day – June
Organize refreshments and coordinate additional volunteers to host the 5th Grade Moving up Day celebration. This event is typically chaired by a 4th Grade parent.

 

STANDING COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVES:

These positions are active for the full school year

 

Arts in Education (Cultural Arts)

This is a district wide program which brings the Arts into the school in the form of music, drama, visual arts and literature. The chairperson, along with the school principal, will plan assemblies and be present during those assemblies. The chairperson will attend monthly Arts in Education meetings at New York Avenue.

 

Council Representative

This representative will attend district scheduled meetings of the Smithtown PTA Council. Meetings are usually the last Monday of the month at 8:00pm, at New York Avenue. Report back to our membership at monthly PTA meetings.

 

Health and Wellness Representative

This representative will attend district scheduled Health and Wellness meetings and work with the principal to establish new programs within the school.  Report back to membership at monthly PTA meetings.

 

School Board Representatives

These representatives will attend district scheduled Board meetings, held every other Tuesday (8:00pm) at New York Avenue. Report back to membership at monthly PTA meetings. Representatives can alternate attendance at meetings.

 

Special Education PTA (SEPTA) Representative

This representative will attend district scheduled SEPTA meetings, held the first Monday of the month. Report back to membership at monthly PTA meetings.
